Cape Cod Gateway Airport (HYA) is a rather unique facility. Situated in Barnstable County, Massachusetts, the airport serves as a major hub for air travel throughout the Cape Cod peninsula and provides connections to nearby Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket.
The airport was originally opened in 1928 when it served as a naval air facility. HYA continued to grow, and its commercial offerings began to diversify. By 2007, a record 420,000 passengers passed through the airport’s doors. But service began to decline, and passenger numbers throughout the 2010s dwindled even before the COVID-19 pandemic struck. In 2022, the airport saw just 38,000 passengers.
